Repair a disk using Disk Utility on Mac. I allocated around 300 GB to the installation because my parents wanted to try if Windows worked any better for them (it's my parents machine, after all). Flash forward to a couple of days ago when my parents again desired a Windows installation on their iMac - but this time, 'for good'.

With that in mind, first thing I did was make a Time Machine backup on an external harddrive, so that in case anything goes wrong I could always revert back - so I naively thought, at least. Next I made sure to look for a legitimate installation - I found I still had a legitimate Windows 7 key, so I decided to make a Windows 7 Installation USB and allocate around 650 GB of the 800 GB left on the harddrive to the Windows installation. Now here I started to notice my first major mistake in the installation, and it's quite a big one. I've put the installation ISO of Windows 7 on a USB 3.0 32 GB flash drive, but the Windows 7 installation program natively doesn't support USB 3.0 drivers so the installation was halted here.

Luckily I still had an USB 2.0 flash drive somewhere laying around, so I decided that, if I just formatted that drive the same way as the USB 3.0 drive, I could basically 'clone' it by copying over the files from the 3.0 to the 2.0 drive. Turns out, after selecting and formatting the BOOTCAMP partition in the installation, the Setup couldn't proceed and I should check the log for details. This was the point where it all went downhill. When booting up the Mac again after closing the installation, it booted to the Windows part of the drive which - of course - had nothing on it, so it kept repeating the same error of 'No bootable devices found'. After finding myself an USB wired keyboard, I was able to access the recovery menu of the Mac and enter my old installation of Mac OS X High Sierra, which was still working.

I figured 'well, if I just delete the Windows Partition, I will get the unallocated space back to my main hard drive, right?' Turns out I was terribly wrong, for the second time. But only this time I noticed the space got lost. Now, if I look at the partitions on this drive in Disk Utility, it shows this: I find this to be incredibly odd, because the partition 'Macintosh HD' only shows this being usable: But I wouldn't have come for help if I was able to use the available troubleshoots on the Internet, however. So here are all the things I've tried (but didn't give any sufficient results): • Reinstall Mac OS X via the recovery and formatting the old installation. I've did this to get a clean installation of the system and maybe the new partition would automatically find the unused space. Turns out, this space isn't quite as unused as I thought; it actually is being used by an encrypted drive named 'Recovery', as big as - I kid you not - 982.7 GB.

Unfortunately I had to find out these options aren't available anymore in newer versions of Mac OS X. Such a shame as my exact problem could've been fixed by this, so it seems. • Use the terminal. Now since I'm not really proficient in the technical aspects of Mac OS X I couldn't deduct a lot from it, but this is what the 'diskutil list' command gave me.
